A Balance (2020), directed by Yujiro Harumoto, starring Kumi Takiuchi – film review

An underage high-school girl, suspected in a relationship with her professor, plunges into a river. As the school authorities refuse to take home the blame, and the media haunts everyone’s families, the professor also commits suicide. While this debacle catches fire throughout the country, documentary director Yako who moonlights as a teacher at the cram school –that she jointly runs with her dad– embarks on a mission to capture the truth behind this case of double suicide. With each unfolding secret, she learns that some truths can be too close to home.
